What Google Looks at to Rank Your Local Business

If your business doesn't show up on the map when someone searches for 'restaurant in your area', it's not a coincidence. Google looks at specific things and you can improve them. I'll tell you the ones that matter most for a small business, no fluff.

The listing: your storefront on Google

The business listing (Google Business Profile) is the most important thing. If you haven't claimed it, you're already losing. Complete it entirely: category, hours, phone, address, photos. And don't forget the questions: answer them. For example: an auto repair shop with clear hours and photos of its facilities gets twice as many clicks as one without a complete listing.

The listing posts also count. Publish offers or news every two weeks. That's all you need.

Reviews: digital word-of-mouth

Reviews are Google's social proof. The more you have and the better rated, the higher you appear. Ask happy customers for reviews at the right moment, via WhatsApp or email, with a direct link. Respond to all of them: to the good ones, by saying thank you, and to the bad ones, without getting defensive. That shows.

Forget about buying reviews. Google detects it and the penalty is serious. Better ten real reviews than fifty fake ones.

Local content and links: what can't be improvised

The internet isn't just social media. If the local newspaper mentions your business or you collaborate with a neighborhood association, Google interprets it as a trust signal. Appearing in local directories and on your city council's website also helps.

On your website, write about problems in your area: 'plumber for damp issues in [district]' or 'dental clinic near [square]'. Don't write for Google; write for the neighbor who is looking for exactly that.

The mistake that ruins everything

Changing your address or category from one day to the next, using one listing for two different businesses, or ignoring negative reviews. That confuses Google and sinks you. Keep it clean and consistent.

In short: complete listing, real reviews, and local presence. Apply this and you'll see changes. If you'd rather not deal with it, request the free diagnosis at stanvakweb and we'll tell you exactly where to start.
